3 Killed Small plane crashes in Boca Raton, Florida

Near Overpass In Area Of Military And Glades.

UPDATE: RADAR TRACKING SHOWS PLANE IN TROUBLE FOR MINUTES BEFORE CRASH

UPDATE 5:33 p.m. — N. Military Trail between NW 19th St. and Butts Rd will remain closed overnight.

UPDATE 4:50 P.M: THE NTSB RELEASED THIS STATEMENT TO BOCANEWSNOW.COM: The NTSB opened an investigation into the crash of a Cessna 310 airplane near Boca Raton, Florida on Friday at about 10:30 am ET. An NTSB investigator arrived at the accident site at about 4 pm ET today.  After the wreckage is documented, it will then be moved to a secure facility for further evaluation. NTSB investigations involve three primary areas: the pilot, the aircraft and the operating environment. As part of this process, investigators will gather the following information and records:

  • Flight track data
  • Recordings of any air traffic control communications
  • Aircraft maintenance records
  • Weather forecasts and actual weather and lighting conditions around the time of the accident
  • Pilot’s license, ratings and recency of flight experience
  • 72-hour background of the pilot to determine if there were any issues that could have affected the pilot’s ability to safety operate the flight
  • Witness statements
  • Electronic devices that could contain information relevant to the investigation
  • Any available surveillance video, including from doorbell cameras

Witnesses to the accident or those who have surveillance video or other information that could be relevant to the investigation are asked to contact the NTSB at witness@ntsb.gov.During the on-scene phase of the investigative process, the NTSB does not determine or speculate about the cause of the accident.

UPDATE: 4:10 p.m. — Military Trail REMAINS CLOSED between 19th Street and Butts Road. It will remain closed until further notice. 

UPDATE: 2:04 p.m. — Glades at I-95 is now open. 

UPDATE: 1:46 p.m. — TriRail service remains suspended between Deerfield Beach and north of Boca Raton. TriRail is using bus service to transport passengers in this area. The plane crashed into the area of the train tracks. We have learned that two bodies were found on the train tracks. Road closures as of 1:46 p.m. include Military Trail from Butts Road and NW 19th Street; 1-95 ramps to westbound Glades Road; 2 lanes on I-95 southbound near Glades Road; Glades Road from Renaissance Way to Airport Road east and westbound. 

UPDATE: 1:30 p.m. — Victim update. Three dead, one injured. The injured person was on the ground at the time of the crash. 

UPDATE 1:10 p.m. — Boca Raton Police report that Military Trail between NW 19th Street and Butts Road remains closed. The I-95 overpass at Glades Road remains closed in both directions. 

UPDATE: 11:55 a.m. — Radar tracking obtained by BocaNewsNow.com shows that the plane was circling for several minutes before crashing near Boca Raton airport. Watch the radar loop, courtesy of FlightRadar24.com, below. It appears to have never ascended to more than 600 feet. The plane is a Cessna registered to a Delaware LLC. It is identified as a 1977 Cessna 310R. 

UPDATE: 11:49 a.m. — We have learned this was a Cessna heading to Tallahassee airport. Three people were on board. All were killed. 

UPDATE: 11:16 a.m. — Photos and video shared with BocaNewsNow.com show a scene full of fire and smoke near the Glades Road overpass over Military Trail. The scene — specifically in the area of the train tracks — is calmer now, but roads remain closed in the area. They will likely remain closed throughout the afternoon. We are awaiting an official statement from Boca Raton PD and Boca Raton Fire Rescue. The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate this crash. We have learned three people were killed. Two bodies were found on the train tracks in the area. The pilot reported a mechanical problem just before the crash. Fire Rescue was responding to the area of the airport when the plane went down

UPDATE: 10:52 a.m. — The plane reported mechanical issues upon approach to Boca Raton Airport around 10:17 a.m. Fire rescue was put on “alert” as the plane approached

UPDATE: 10:49 a.m. — Roads in the area of the crash have been closed. Boca Raton PD says the closures start in the area of Military Trail and 19th street. The exit from I-95 to Glades Road is closed. The Glades Road overpass is closed in all directions.
